Contemplating: Working Mom or Work At Home Mom

The Idealistic Me

Back in 1999, as I am to graduate from Secondary Education, I already listed down the courses which I will take in College. Part of my lists is the following: Civil Engineering, Tourism Management, and Accountancy. My parents wanted me to be an accountant and like an obedient child I followed them. Fortunately or unfortunately Accountancy is not yet being offered in the University I enrolled thus I proceed enrolling under the course Business Management. Fast forward, I graduated with flying colors in 2003. Back then, I am so idealistic that I already planned my future. I envisioned myself that at the age of 25 I already finished my Graduate Studies, I will be married, I got my own house and car and I will be a Manager to whatever job I will land to.

Hello Corporate World!

After taking a three-month vacation after graduation, I finally landed to my first job. This is not what I dreamed of, but due to pressures being an Honor Graduate I have to grab this opportunity in a government post. Yes, I am enjoying this job but another opportunity knocked on my door. Since I am enjoying my current job, I am hesitant to accept the opportunity given to me by a Bank, but due to the security of tenure and as an obedient daughter, I accepted the job. I embraced my job wholeheartedly and started to work hard to achieve my goal.

Achieving My Goals at 25

Yes, I achieved some of my goals at the age of 25 and I am proud of it. With perseverance, hard work and a lot of prayers I made it. I finished my Graduate Course, I got married, we are paying the amortization for our own house and we have an old car. Praise God! There’s one thing I am not able to achieve though, that is being a Manager in the Bank. I must admit it is really hard to get this position in this Bank and is not attainable in just a span of 5 years. I accepted that fact but I didn't feel defeated.

The Working Mom

After a year of getting married, I gave birth to our first born. Things weren’t easy. I am commuting from Silang, Cavite to Pasay every day. No house help, no Yaya. Just my mom to take care of my daughter. Yes, it is very tiring, but at the end of the day, your passion will drive you closer to your goals. It might be a little too late, and maybe too early for some, but I got the managerial position in 2011. Eight years after graduation. That's in the middle of juggling between being a Mom, a wife, and a daughter. This is it! I have already achieved my life goals and now enjoy the fruit of my hard work. Things continue to do good for me until I gave birth to my second born and my Mom (who help me taking care of my elder daughter) suffered from a stroke.

Weighing options

To be or not to be?

For 13 years, I am used to commuting going back and forth to the office. I am feeling like a superwoman back then. I can do everything. But time changes things, getting old (not so old of course!) will make you feel tired. Of course, there are a lot of other factors. My mom still takes care of my newborn but she cannot stay up late anymore due to her condition. So I have to choose. Choose between a high paying job and a job which is nearer to home, but pays low. At the end of the day, I am still a mom, so I have to forego a very good job in the Bank with another. The job I have right now lets me have more time with my kids. Nonetheless, I am happy with my current job. But my daughter is seeking my of my attention. It's so heartbreaking hearing her say "Mommy, are you going to work again now?", "are you leaving me?", "please come back later, Mommy". So these words struck me and made me enroll in this freelancing course.

So what do you think, fellow working Moms, should I quit my current day job and focused on working at home?
